Introduction

The Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/3.5 AI, is considered one of Nikons sharpest lenses. It features Nikons NIC coating(Nikon Integrated Coating) and a floating element system in the rear lens group, to maintain its high optical performance at its closest focusing distance. This is most definitely an oldie goldie.

Positives

  • Sharp. Incredible resolution with this lens.
  • Infinity focus, this is the macro lens with the best infinity focus I have tested so far.
  • Price, on the second hand market this lens sells quite cheap
  • DOF/IR marking

Drawbacks

  • 1:2 macro, you need pk-13 or a bellows to get 1:1 macro with this lens.
  • Collects dusts. This lens is prone to collect dust because of its construction.

Verdict

This lens is crisp and sharp, with good contrast. The Micro-Nikkor 55mm is excellent for small product shots. In my opinion, if you want a macro lens, go for a manual focus lens, and you might as well go for the best of the best, the Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/3.5. This lens is sharper then the Micro-Nikkor f/2.8. The AF 60mm Micro-Nikkor is a good alternative, which brings the magnification up to 1:1.

Sample Pictures

Camera: Nikon D2H, Nikon D200.
Flash: Nikon SB-800 and SB-600
This time the pictures have been converted to .Jpg in Photoshop CS3.
On all shots I`ve used 3 Flashes, first 3 shots a orange gel has been used in one of the SB-800`s and a blue gel in one, main flash had no gel attached. In the flower pictures one flash had a blue gel, the other two had the normal diffuser attached
